Star international pianist Janina Fialkowska returns to the Lyell Gustin Recitals with an all-Romantic program, music of the rich golden age of the piano: Brahms’s Rhapsody in B minor, thee Intermezzi, and Capriccio in D minor; Valse Triste by Sibelius, and Invitation to the Dance by Weber; and a signature Chopin group including Polonaise in A, Nocturne in F, and the G minor Ballade. Canadian-born, and now residing in Europe, Ms. Fialkowska has performed on prestigious stages worldwide and has appeared with the foremost orchestras on this continent and abroad.
She is celebrated for her performance of Classical and Romantic repertoire, and is considered one of the great interpreters of the works of Chopin and a champion of the music of Liszt. Her discopgraphy is extensive, and has garnered acclaim and awards such as BBC Music Magazine’s “Instrumental CD of the Year” award (2013) and a classical Juno (2018). This recital, finale of Ms. Fialkowska’s Canadian tour, will be followed shortly by her concert at the Berliner Klavierfestival. Cameron Crozman, Cello, with Meagan Milatz, Piano. August 22, 2022, 7:30 pm, St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church
Hailed as one of Canada’s most outstanding young cellists of the new generation, Cameron Crozman was named Classical Révélation artist 2019-20 (CBC/Radio-Canada). A graduate of Conservatoire de Paris, he was one of six cellists from around the world chosen for Gautier Capuçon’s 2016-17 Classe d’Excellence at Louis Vuitton Foundation. Most recently, Mr. Crozman has been engaged in musical life in Spain, exploring that rich cultural tradition. He regularly concertizes in Europe and Asia, and is heard on CBC, Radio France, Radio Classique, and Medici.tv. His discography includes Cavatine, recorded on a Stradivarius cello; the Britten Cello Suites; and Tapeo, celebrating Spanish music.
Collaborative pianist is Meagan Milatz, originally from the Weyburn area of Saskatchewan. She has won top prizes for performance and has appeared as soloist with orchestras across Canada. A sought- after ensemble artist, she performs with finest solo and chamber instrumentalists, including violinist Andrew Wan and cellist Matt Haimovitz; she is pianist for Montreal’s Trio Fibonacci. Ms. Milatz and Canadian violinist Amy Hills released the debut album Roots in 2019; the duo gave 50 concerts nationwide as winners of the initial Pan-Canadian Partnership Recital Tour offered by Jeunesses Musicales Canada, Debut Atlantic, and Prairie Debut.
The Gustin Recital includes Sonata in F Major for Cello and Piano by Brahms, a rarely- heard work by Lizst, and de Falla’s Suite populaire espagnole, splendid colourful miniatures evocative of Spain.
